Our History

The Market was born out of a desire to provide customers with the freshest, highest quality product in a family focused atmosphere. Together, Smith Family Farms, Shuter Sunset Farms and other local farms, provide The Market with meats that are almost 100% sourced from Madison County.

The Market continues a local focus by providing other high quality food products to compliment their fresh and frozen meat selections.

Smith Family Farms

Smith Family Farms is a 7th generation farm dating back to the 1830s. The family farms approximately 2500 acres of corn, soybeans, wheat and hay. A successful cattle operation consists of cow/calf production all the way through to the finished product.

Fifteen years ago, the Smiths created an agritourism event held on the farm every year in September and October. This event helped fill their passion for educating the public about Indiana agriculture and where food actually comes from.

Their retail meat business was born from this agritourism event - customers requested farm fresh meat and the Smiths were happy to deliver. After years of continued growth, Smiths Family Farms continue to serve hundreds of loyal customers and a few local restaurants.

Shuter Sunset Farms

Shuter Sunset Farms is a 4th generation farm founded by Leslie and Alma Shuter in the early 1900s. Their son, Mervin, started a registered herd of Red Poll Cattle as a 4-H project in 1941 and the nationally recognized herd remains on the farm today.

Mervin married his wife Marilyn in 1950 and they raised two children, Mike and Emily, on the farm. After an active 4-H and FFA career, Mike attended Purdue University and studied AgEconomics. Mike returned to the farm after obtaining his degree and has expanded the farms row crop enterprise to a current level of nearly 3000 acres of corn, beans and wheat in northern Madison County.

Both Mervin and Mike have been recognized as the Outstanding Conservation Farmer in Madison County and Mike has won many state and national awards for his leadership with conservation farming practices to preserve and improve the soil quality on the farm.

Mike and his wife Susan also raised two children on the farm. Brian and Patrick, both following the family footsteps, participated in FFA, 4-H and Purdue Agriculture, and have returned to the family farm.

With expanding livestock enterprises in beef cattle and pork production, Shuter Sunset Farms is working to ensure there is a place for the 5th generation to call home.

Brian married his wife, Sarah, in 2003, and the couple has two children, Jacob and Carly. Patrick and his wife, Sara, were married in 2013 and also have two children, Michael and Corbin.

Maddie Moo's Custom Meats

Maddie Moo’s Custom Meats, originally known as Marsh Processing, is a family owned business that started in 1984. From deer processing to custom butchering, the business grew. The youngest Marsh sibling, Kevin, decided to make the business his career and added on to the facility to offer smoke meats and full service custom butchering.

In 2010, Kevin and his wife Corie took over the business and expanded further with retail sales, restaurant sales and friendly customer service. Marsh Processing was renamed as Maddie Moo’s Custom Meats after their daughter, Maddie.
